Must Items for Your Pet First Aid Kit

pet first aid kit A first aid kit is vital for your pet’s health. You should especially have a first aid kit for your pets if you live in a rural area, far away from immediate help, or take a vacation and bring your pet along. A pet first aid kit is a good idea for the home as well, just to be safe until you can take your pet to the vet.

So how do you make a first aid kit for your pet? It should include some items that you may have in your own first aid kit, as well as a few other items specific to your pet’s needs.

Bandages. Like a human first aid kit, a few essentials like bandages, gauze wrapping and clean rags should be put in the kit. All of these will help in the case of cuts or sprains. Keeping a wound clean is essential for it to heal. I remember my parent’s dog Scooter use to love to stretch out in her cage. Once she got her paw stuck in the bottom and sprained herself. Wrapping her leg until we could see a vet was vital for her recovery.

Pet information and records. Contact information for your vet should go in the first aid kit as well. Any medicine your pet may need should be written out. Include the vaccination history of your pet. You should also have emergency numbers ready. If a babysitter is at your home, train your kids to know how to access all the information if an accident happens and you’re not around. If you’re traveling, including this information will give an out-of-town vet the tools they need to treat your pet properly.

Antiseptic. Again, a popular first aid item you probably have around the house. However if you’re traveling with your pet make sure you include something to disinfect a wound. Antiseptic can be rubbed immediately on a wound to clean it. You never know what your pet might get into on vacation. Trust me, they will want to explore and sometimes that can lead to scrapes! Make sure to include some cotton balls to apply the antiseptic.

Tools. You need to include tools that you can use if you need to treat your pet in an emergency. Scissors will help you cut any mangled hair, or remove it around a wound. Gloves will make sure you can keep yourself clean, and avoid contaminating any wound.

Extras. Always have an extra leash for your pet (especially if on vacation). If one breaks, you will have quick access to a replacement. An extra collar is also a good idea. You can also look into muzzles that will keep your pet from trying to lick a wound, which is a quick way to infect it.

Whether at home or on the road, a pet first aid kit will improve the health of your pet. If your pet loves to explore, it’s likely to have an accident here and there. Until you can reach the vet, a good pet first aid kit is a vital way from keeping a small scrape from turning into something more serious.
