New Year’s Resolutions for Pet Owners

New Years Resolutions for Pet Owners

As 2018 winds to a close millions of Americans are starting to think about the new year. For many of us it’s a time to reflect on the things we would like to improve on in our lives. New Year’s resolutions seem to come and go, however, with few sticking to their goals. There are lots of things that you can do in 2019 to improve your pet’s life. If you’re looking for a resolution that you will stick to consider these changes to enhance your dog or cat’s life:

Portion Control. Start the new year by measuring your pet’s food. Most pet owners fill the food bowl to the top every day, which might be too much food for your pet. Instead limit the portion sizes by measuring out the food in scoops. If your pet has weight issues and gets exercise, this will help shed the pounds.

Groom Your Pet More. Make brushing your pet a higher priority in 2019. Brushing a cat or dog is the most important thing an owner can do, other than feeding the animal. Grooming services many purposes other than removing extra hair. Brushing helps distribute oils on the pet’s skin, helps you notice any possible bumps or things out of the ordinary, and is a great bonding time with your pet!

Walk More Often. Walking your dog should be a daily part of your routine. Make 2019 the year you stick to that goal. Dogs in particular take on the lifestyle of their humans, and if you’re sedentary they will be too. Walking your dog also reduces behavior problems. It’s also a great way for both of you to start to get into shape!

Visit the Vet. If you haven’t seen us in 2018, it’s time to visit us again! An annual check up is the minimum you should do for your dog and/or cat. Yes even cats should see the vet annually. Preventative care starts with routine check-ups that can catch health problems before they become too serious.

Start a Bucket List. Is your pet a senior? Owners often know when the end is near. Take advantage of the time you have left while your pet is still in good health for one last car ride, trip to the beach, or catch in the back yard. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do with your senior pet, make 2019 the year it happens. Allow each member of your family to plan an activity.
