Importance of Pet Insurance

Importance of Pet Insurance September is Pet Insurance month, a time to highlight the importance of insurance for your pet. While most pet owners don’t think pet insurance is worth it, it’s helpful to consider for any pet you might have. Confusing policies with copays and deductibles may turn off a lot of pet owners to getting insurance for their pets, however it is well worth the investment.

Every pet requires medical attention of some kind throughout its life. My parents spent around $150 per month on their dog, who had terrible allergies and other health problems. Like humans, health problems can pop up for your pet regardless of age, breed, or where you adopted from. While most of the time you can pay out of pocket for basic checkups, if a pet needs surgery you could be out thousands of dollars that you didn’t expect to spend.

It is always difficult to think about surgery for your pet. However pets are at risk for developing health problems no matter what. Pets that are especially at risk are pets that spend time outdoors in areas with a lot of dangers, including wooded areas with wildlife, cities with a lot of traffic, etc. If your pet is mostly an indoor pet, like a cat, you may be safe without insurance. However don’t forget there are dangers indoors too. Pets can get into food they shouldn’t eat and need immediate care.

Another benefit to pet health insurance is you can use any vet that you want. Unlike human health care, pet insurance does not limit you to certain doctors or hospitals. All you have to do is submit the bill from your veterinarian and the insurance company will handle the rest. Pet insurance doesn’t discriminate based on age or breed of the pet either. That makes insurance a great idea, especially for older pets who develop more problems as they age.

Pet insurance is relatively affordable. Plans range from $20-$50 per month, on average. Those plans usually come with a deductible, however you can expect most of the bill to be taken care of by the insurance. As much as 90% of your vet bills will be covered by pet insurance. Companies even offer discounts for spay/neutering procedures and discounts for multiple pets.

Pet insurance is a wise choice regardless of the age of your pet, pet type or current health. It gives you piece of mind to ensure that your pet stays happy and healthy throughout its life.
