Healthy One-Ingredient Dog Snacks

Healthy One-Ingredient Dog Snacks Giving our dogs a treat is a great way to train them to behave the right way. But many popular dog treats are full of junk. Like humans dogs consume a lot of processed food that can lead to weight gain, diabetes and other health problems. Additives are very popular in dog treats and it’s important to avoid artificial colors, flavors and other bad stuff as much as possible. The fewer ingredients, the healthier the snack. Luckily there are a lot of one-ingredient healthy snacks that dogs will eat up!

There are lots of vegetables that you can feed your dog. Cabbage, for example, can prevent cancer in humans and dogs. Just don’t feed your dog too much cabbage since it will cause gas. My dog Scooter loved her nightly carrots (I think she loved the crunch). You can even cook carrots and mash them up in the dog’s food bowl. Sweet potatoes are another good option for dogs. Mash the potatoes in with your dog’s regular food for an antioxidant punch.

While there are a number or fruits that dogs should avoid, there are several fruits that are great for snacks. Apples can be fed to dogs for a vitamin C and vitamin K boost. Just make sure you cut up the apples before you feed them to your dog. Apple stems, the core and seeds are poisonous to dogs. Dogs also really love the flavor of pumpkins. Chunks of pumpkin should be cooked.

There are a number of one-ingredient freeze-dried options for pets. Companies make everything from dehydrated fruits and veggies to single-serving fish skin. Freeze dried chicken breasts are good for special occasions (like Thanksgiving or Christmas) when dogs come to expect to be fed at the table. Include a few pieces of chicken on your plate and drop them down to fido. Your dog won’t know the difference and you’ll keep all the human food to yourself! Another great protein for your dog is sardines. You can find them frozen or in a can and your dog will go nuts for a piece. Aside from the protein boost, sardines are also packed with healthy omega-3s.

Grains are typically avoided, however brown rice can be a nice treat for your dog. It will calm the dog’s stomach and is packed with fiber. It’s one of the few grains most experts recommend to feed dogs. Include it in the food bowl with your mashed sweet potatoes or pumpkins for an extra punch.
