National Pet Day is coming up on April 11th (this Thursday). For people thinking of getting a new pet, this day highlights the importance of adoption. For current pet owners it’s a day to celebrate our furry friends! Are you looking to get the most out of your National Pet Day with your pet? If so here are a few ways that you can celebrate together:
Visit the park. Enjoy some early Spring weather and escape from work for a few hours and talk your dog for a walk in the park. If you dog is feeling extra social find a dog park in your neck of the woods and make it a social event!
Play with a new toy. If you don’t have a dog and still want some play time together, buy your pet a new toy. Or, if you have a cat like our’s, a simple piece of string will do.
Make it a special treat day. You know that treat that your pet loves but you don’t love giving it to them all the time? On National Pet Day, it’s okay to give your pet that special treat that it enjoys. Especially if you’ve both been exercising.
Go out to eat. So many restaurants are becoming pet-friendly. Head to your favorite spot that allows pets and have a fun night out with the whole family.
Visit the pet store. My old dog used to love going to the pet store and would smell all over the place! Visit the store with your furry friend and do some shopping together.
Go on a day trip. If you have some extra time go on a day trip to a location that your pet will love. I used to drive to the mountains with my parents dog for a longer hike on special occasions. Your pet may love a day at the beach or a walk in a different community.
Try a new activity. Like humans, pets love new things. Try a new activity with your pet and see how it responds. For example, if your dog loves water, take the dog on a paddle board together. Even just changing up the routine for a day will be welcome to most pets.
Get an annual checkup. Less fun for your pet, but just as rewarding. If you haven’t visited us in awhile with your pet, it’s probably time for a yearly checkup. Annual checkups are important for most pets to make sure they stay happy and healthy and get in front of any potential problems before they become serious.
